Welcome to the Geneva Nations Institute! We are excited to welcome you to Switzerland and support your journey as an international student. Please carefully read the following guidelines to prepare your student visa application.
Do You Need a Visa?
If you are a non-EU/EEA national and plan to study in Switzerland for more than 90 days, you must apply for a Swiss National (Type D) Student Visa before entering the country.
Important: You cannot enter Switzerland on a tourist visa and then convert it to a student visa.
How to Apply for Your Swiss Student Visa
- Prepare the Required Documents
Check with your nearest Swiss Embassy or Consulate, but in general, you will need:
- Valid passport (at least 6 months valid after your stay)
- Completed Type D visa application form
- Official admission letter from the Geneva Nations Institute
- Passport-sized photos (recent, per embassy specifications)
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Proof of tuition payment
- Proof of accommodation in Switzerland
- Motivation letter explaining your study plans
- CV or resume
- Diplomas or transcripts (with certified translations if necessary)
- Health insurance coverage
- Visa application fee payment receipt
2. Book Your Visa Appointment
- Contact the Swiss Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
- Book an appointment early.
3. Submit Your Application
- Attend the appointment in person with all required documents.
- Submit biometrics if required.
- Processing time is typically 6–12 weeks, depending on your home country and Swiss canton.
- The embassy will notify you when your visa is ready for collection.
5. Upon Arrival in Switzerland
Within 14 days of arrival, you must:
- Register your residence at the local migration office
- Apply for your Swiss residence permit (Permit B)
